Dental Emergencies

Sometimes we don’t think of dental problems as being an emergency, but a broken tooth, jaw pain or pain from an infection can be excruciating. And some dental problems might get worse without immediate care. Of course, if your situation is life-threatening, then a visit to the local hospital emergency room is needed, but for most dental emergencies, a dental visit is the best solution.

Our staff at Northern Dental Design will consider you a priority if you call us for an emergency. We will provide pain relief and then treatment as soon as we can. Our priority is your comfort, so once you arrive, we will do what we can to help you relax and feel safe. And then we will get to work on evaluating the problem to find solutions that will put you on the path to healing.

What to do in Case of a Dental Emergency

If your health is not in jeopardy, call us right away and let the receptionist know that you have a dental emergency. Your appointment will take priority so we can meet with you quickly. While you are at home, there are some ways to be proactive which may provide relief:

Cracked teeth can happen with a fall or trauma to the face. If you get a cracked tooth, call and schedule an emergency visit with us. Over-the-counter pain medication can help reduce pain for a while. Keeping your head elevated may help alleviate pain, and holding a cold compress on your face in the area of the pain may also provide relief. Rinse your mouth with slightly warm salt water every few hours to keep bacteria to a minimum until it is time for your appointment.

Chipped teeth often result in no pain, but still, require attention. Rinsing your mouth with warm salt water can kill bacteria that may lead to infection. Then call our office to schedule an emergency dental appointment.

Broken teeth are more extensive than a cracked tooth. The breakage may go under the gumline, or part of the tooth might fall out. Do not brush the tooth, but do a gentle rinse with slightly warm salt water. If you can safely and painlessly fit the broken part of a tooth back where it belongs, try bonding it with toothpaste or temporary dental bond until you are able to see us. If you cannot fit the tooth on, drop the broken part into a cup of full-fat milk and bring it to your appointment. We will do our best to save your tooth, so the sooner your visit, the sooner we can help.

Abscessed teeth or gums happen due to trauma or infection. No matter what the cause, an abscess is a dental emergency that should be dealt with quickly. Rinse with warm salt water every few hours and try not to touch or poke at it. Let us know you have an abscess so we can schedule your visit right away to stop the infection from spreading.

Facial swelling can be caused by a number of problems including infection or trauma. If you are uncertain of the reason, a visit to your local emergency room may be required. If you believe it is due to dental issues, call us right away. A cool compress and over-the-counter medication for pain and swelling is a temporary solution until we can find the source of the problem and deal with it. Be sure to let us know you have an emergency so we can prioritise your appointment.
